Check an IBAN

Paste an account number and see at once whether it’s right. For a Belgian number you also see the bank and the BIC.

Checked on your device

Explanation

Check an IBAN in three steps

  1. Paste the number

With or without spaces, in upper or lower case. Convert an old Belgian number further down.

  2. Zegel does the maths

The length for the country, the check digits (modulo 97) and, for a Belgian number, the old check digits inside it too.

  3. Copy it or make a QR code

Copy the number neatly in groups of four, or make a payment QR code with it straight away.

Good to know

  • Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. It means the number is well formed, so a typo almost always shows up. Only the bank knows whether the account is open and who it belongs to.

  • Where does the bank name come from?

From the list of identification codes published by the National Bank of Belgium. The three digits after BE and the check digits point to the bank. The list is in the sources, with its date.

  • Does my IBAN go to a server?

No. The check and the bank list are built into the page itself. Nothing leaves your device.
