How do the check digits work?
The structured communication has twelve digits. The last two are the remainder of the first ten divided by 97, or 97 if that remainder is zero. That way a typo almost always shows up.
Can I use my invoice number?
Yes, that’s the usual way: your bank statement then shows straight away which invoice has been paid. Zegel pads the number on the left with zeros up to ten digits and adds the check digits.
What about *** instead of +++?
You’ll see both forms; banks read the twelve digits. Zegel accepts both and writes the usual form with +++ itself.
